Dear Jim and Jan,and friends

Thank you for your warm encouraging words and stimulus news of your proposal for the coming Hemingway Conference at Petoskey in 2012. Hope your plans and ideas will be accepted. I still clearly remember the trip to Seney and the area with you who are the excellent, native guide of Hemingway's world of nature. I hope I am able to join the trip which you plan and attend the conference.

After the earthquakes and tsunami:

I have seen how the people help each other.
The fear of nuclear is spreading over the area and our area which locates a few hundred miles away; moreover, the fear and actual contamination are spreading all over the country We are still not sure how we will be poisoned by the X-ray and radioactivity, but I believe we should be cool to know the true facts and to find out what each can do against the radioactive contamination. We cannot leave and desert our beautiful country. We may rebuild our country soon.

I appreciate how you care of us.

On behalf of the Hemingway Society of Japan, I thank you and deliver your message on our web-site and try to share it among us.

Dear Tateo,

People here in Illinois wom you have never met keep asking if our friends in Japan are safe.  The news reports reaching us are all about the nuclear crisis; nevertheless, common folk remain deeply concerned about those who have been made homeless, injured or killed by the earthquake and tsunami.  Please know that the Japanese people are in their prayers as in ours.  On Thursday evening and again on Sunday everyone present at the meetings of the Salvation Army Corps offered prayers.  That and sending money for relief efforts seem to be all we can do.

Otherwise, life goes on.  Spring has arrived and with it the usual wet and chilly weather.  Bird migrations have brought huge flocks of previously endangered sandhill cranes overhead.  They are a treat to see and hear.  The robins returned a month ago and are now staking out nesting sights.  It makes for a noisy back yard as they compete with the resident cardinals.

I have submitted a proposal for a three person panel for the 2012 Hemingway International conference.  It involves interviews by Jack Jobst, Ken Marek and myself about people who knew EH in the Petoskey area.  Jack and I are also supposed to plan the day trip to Seney.  We need to get started on that soon.  I also have put together a presentation for NCTE on Fitzgerald's Josephine Perry stories, but do not know if it will be accepted or not. Jim has been working on genealogy and philately.  He has had several articles published on these subjects in the last year.  We will not be traveling to Lyon or Havana this summer for conferences.  Hope to see you in 2012!

Our prayers remain with you and your missing students. Please let us know what you learn about their fate.

Jan

Dear Jan and Jim,

Thank you for your warm mail.

I have been busy with my students of our university; there are 11
students who have been missing in Iwate prefecture. I got a good news
yesterday from one of my students who was survived from the tsunami.

Here is my report which I sent to Debra.

Dear Debra  Moddelmog,

Thank you for your warm mail. The members of EH Society of Japan are
safe so far I know. Some of the families of our members who live in
that area have lost their houses but they are alive. Ai Ogasawara is
now in Boston as you may know. All my families, my daughter's and
son's with their sons and a daughter who live near our house either
in Yokohama or in Tokyo are safe without any damage.

I appreciate your mail, which makes me realize there is one who cares
of us out of Japan.

Dear Tateo,

I'm sure you have more important matters to take care of in the
aftershock of the horrible earthquake and tsunami, but I wanted you
to know that I've been thinking about you and the other Japanese
Hemingway scholars and am hoping that you are all safe.  If you have
a chance to check in, I'd love to know that you're alive and well,
but I understand if you're unable to drop me a note at this time.
Just know that I am thinking of you and hoping for the very best for
you and your country.

You're in my thoughts,

Dear Tateo,

Jim and I have been very concerned about all our friends in Japan.
Are you safe?  Have you heard from Toshi and Taeko, Akiko, Satoru
Wada and others?  Your student, Ai, remains in Boston for a few more
days then flies home to Tokyo to be with her husband and family.
Her e-mail of this morning was very up-beat, but I know the return
home will be difficult in many ways.

At the Salvation Army Corps where Jim and I attend church we are
offering prayers and have taken a special collection to help with
relief efforts.  There is so little else we can do!  Do know that
you are not forgotten.

God bless,

Jan
